Overview: What do Captains/Mates do?
Responsibilities vary greatly based on the rank and experience of the sailor. Ship's crew and deckhands will perform as directed by the captain of the ship. Responsibilities may include steering, cargo-handling, maintenance, painting, line handling, standing watch, use of pumps, and reading gauges and displays. More experienced sailors may take responsibilities for safety, communication functions, plotting courses, piloting and commanding the overall operation of the vessel.
